Why Microsoft Surface MIGHT Fail PDF Print E-mail

Recently, there was a pretty big argument on Diggnation regarding Microsoft Surface. You can watch the video below, but basically Kevin didn't beleive in the technology while Alex was bashing Kevin for being a fanboy.

However, I must agree with Kevin on this, and here's why...
I think we should all pause for reflection to remember when Microsoft attempted to hype up the ultramobile personal computer (UMPC), what they said as being around $500, being constantly connected, and having its own innovative software turned out to be the exact opposite. Microsoft captured the worldwide media with their "Origami" campaign, yet failed to deliver. Check out their promotional video below:

In the end, their device came out to be slow, expensive ($1,000+), and having literally no innovative software. It adapted a very small market, and could be considered a "failure" when compared to Microsoft's original promo video. However, their hype didn't end there. What about the Zune? Believe it or not, it had its OWN hype as well. Check out Zune's promotional video before anyone even knew what the Zune really was:

We all know what the zune turned out to be, a mild success at best. Certainly not what consumers would guess after watching that video. So my theory is this, I think we should all hold our words when it comes to Microsoft Surface, and we shouldn't be expecting anything "revolutionary." In the end, at release this thing might let us push pictures around that are in the "My Pictures" folder and draw fun things in Microsoft Paint.

In the end, only time will tell!

P.S. I'm neither a Microsoft or Apple fanboy, don't really care about either, just use PCs because of the cost of Apple products. Once again, I'm NOT bias towards either Macs or PCs.
